Workshop Project 2023
In 2023 we once again held our Workshop Project Week – a full week packed with a wide range of topics, inputs, and creative opportunities.
Textiles
Students watched and discussed documentaries on fast fashion and its consequences – from textile waste in the Atacama Desert to hidden costs of clothing in Kenya and Eastern Europe.
Activities included: clothes swap, plaster masks, making gianduia (hazelnut spread), repairing and decorating theatre costumes, building a wooden Christmas tree, spray-painting figures, fabric painting, and making iced tea syrup.
Plastics & Metals
Discussions focused on documentaries about microplastics in the sea and the global plastic waste crisis.
Workshops offered: “Precious Plastic” upcycling, bird feeders from PET bottles, notebooks from recycled paper and cartons, sewing figure cushions, making deodorant, weaving baskets from fabric scraps, crafting from textiles, knotting, litter collection, and an excursion to Vienna’s “48er Tandler” recycling shop.
Paper & Wood
Documentaries explored topics such as The Secret Life of Trees, furniture retail strategies, and illegal logging in the Carpathians.
Activities included: book exchange, making moisturiser, baking bread, creating jewellery and curtains from fabric, origami, handmade paper, furniture renovation and upholstery, stool building, and a bicycle repair workshop.
Cosmetics & Household
Students discussed documentaries on superfoods, toxic cosmetics, and the tricks of the beauty industry.
Hands-on projects included: making granola, sewing arm warmers from socks, drilling, plastering and sanding, decorating the boys’ restroom, candle making, felting elves and fairies, sewing bags and jeans accessories, and crafting a scarecrow puppet.
Food & Drink
Discussions covered The Future of Food, the truth about ready meals, the value of bread, and sustainability in food production.
Activities included: game exchange, making beeswax wraps, jam, ketchup, mustard, curry paste, chutney, preserving food, crafting room sprays, candles and paper products, baking bread and Italian taralli, spray-painting tiles, sewing glove animals, and making body butter.
