Interwar Period Project

27. February 2024

On the occasion of “90 Years since the Austrian Civil War of 1934,” we dedicated a full week to the theme “Between the Wars.” The students learned about the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, the founding of the First Republic, and the era of “Red Vienna.” A contemporary witness visited and shared memories of her parents, who were resistance fighters during this period, as well as stories from her own childhood. Musicians joined the students in singing resistance songs.

We also visited the Austrian Parliament and an exhibition at City Hall, where the children were especially excited to ride the paternoster lift to the upper floors. At the end of the week, the students released balloons carrying images of their chosen resistance fighters into the sky – a symbolic reminder of the importance of defending democracy and staying vigilant in our own time.
